The mother of 26-year-old custodial death victim Akash Delison strongly protested the release of six police personnel on bail during the ongoing trial into her son’s custodial death at the Sivaganga Special Court for SC/ST Atrocities Act.
Akash Delison, a resident of Krishnarajapuram near Manamadurai, was arrested by local police on the night of March 5 in connection with an assault case in Manamadurai. He sustained critical injuries while in custody and was subsequently admitted to the Madurai Government Rajaji Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
While police maintained that Akash had sustained injuries after jumping off a bridge in an attempt to escape during the arrest attempt, his family and relatives rejected the claim, staging widespread protests alleging he was beaten to death by the police. Following intense agitations, the case was transferred to the CB-CID, which subsequently filed a chargesheet under murder and SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act charges.
Six police personnel—Inspector Dileepan, Sub-Inspector Guhan, and constables Mahendran, Kalishwaran, Deyventhran, and Palaniyappan—were named as the accused in the chargesheet.
When the six accused appeared before the Sivaganga Special Court, Akash’s mother, Muthananthavalli, vehemently objected to their release on bail and petitioned Judge Nagarajan.
Noting that the original First Information Report (FIR) had not yet been formally submitted to the court, the judge stated that a decision regarding the matter would be taken once the document is filed. The case was subsequently adjourned to November 20, with strict instructions for all six accused officers to appear before the court on that date.
