Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant on Sunday (October 11, 2026) declined a request by the Leader of the Opposition, Rahul Gandhi, for a meeting on Monday (October 12, 2026). Sources said the meeting was declined as the issues likely to be raised were already sub judice in the Supreme Court. Besides, the court cannot intervene in matters of governance and functioning of the state on its administrative side.
Rajya Sabha MP John Brittas and All India Students’ Association president Neha were among several protestors allegedly injured by security forces as they were being detained in the capital on Sunday. Despite the Supreme Court’s directives on Saturday, around a dozen journalists were detained on Sunday while covering the protest at different locations. The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) vowed to intensify its agitation against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar as protests were held at several places in the New Delhi area, which remained under a security chokehold.
Meanwhile, the Mumbai Police also detained several people gathered near Shivaji Park in Dadar to protest demanding Mr. Kumar’s resignation. The protesters claimed police personnel had been deployed at multiple entry points around Shivaji Park and that several people were detained even before they could join the demonstration.
