The VI Metropolitan Magistrate Court in Egmore has sentenced two motorists to one year in prison each in two separate road accident cases reported in Kilpauk in 2018 and 2022.
On May 16, 2018, Ponnusamy, 38, was walking along Brick Kiln Road in Otteri when a motorcycle, allegedly driven recklessly, hit him. He was admitted to the hospital but died of injuries on May 20.
The Kilpauk Traffic Investigation Wing police registered a case and arrested the rider, Amit Basha, 19.
In the second case, Saraswathi, 54, was walking along Medavakkam Tank Road in Kellys on November 18, 2022, when a van hit her. She was admitted to the Kilpauk Medical College Hospital, but died while undergoing treatment. The police arrested the van driver, Saravanan, 40.
After the trials concluded, the VI Metropolitan Magistrate Court in Egmore on September 23, 2026, found both accused guilty.
Amit Basha and Saravanan were each sentenced to three months’ imprisonment and fined ₹1,000 under Section 279 of the IPC.
They were also sentenced to one year’s imprisonment and fined ₹5,000 under Section 304(A) of the IPC.
