Delhi protest highlights: The Central Park in Connaught Place will remain shut to the public on October 16 and 17 due to administrative reasons, the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) said in a notice, a move that comes ahead of CJP's "Lehra do Tiranga" march at the park on Friday....
In the notice dated October 15, the civic body said, “It is hereby informed that the Central Park, Connaught Place, shall remain closed for general public on 16th October 2026 & 17th October 2026, due to administrative reasons.”
Delhi Police in a presser appealed to everyone to not join any such gathering which is in violation of Section 163 of the BNSS guideline or affects peace, warning that action will be taken against offenders.
The police added that permission to a select few protesters can be given for a flag march at some other spot.
“All protesters must follow rules while carrying the national flag and while singing the national anthem. Respect and decorum must be maintained towards both the tricolour and the national anthem. We appeal to maintain peace and law and order,” the police said in a presser.
This comes hours after the Delhi High Court refused to pass an order restraining CJP and its founder, Abhijeet Dipke, from holding a protest at Connaught Place on October 16. The court recorded the Delhi Police's assurance that it would take “all possible measures” to control the situation.
Dipke on Wednesday called for a ‘Tiranga March’ at Connaught Place's Central Park on Friday. The march comes in response to the jailing of co-convenors Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka.
Amid tensions in the national capital, the Supreme Court on Thursday heard a series of petitions concerning the Opposition’s challenge to the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise and alleged police excesses, mass detentions and harassment of journalists and lawyers during anti-CEC protests in Delhi last week.
Key takeaways from the Supreme Court hearing:
SIR challenge: Notices issued on petitions challenging the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision exercise.
Jantar Mantar: Government asked to clarify the decision to denotify the designated protest site.
Journalists’ safety: Court termed molestation allegations against police “very serious” and considered a committee headed by a retired woman judge.
Protection from coercive action: Relief granted to a woman journalist booked under the SC/ST Act.
Preservation of evidence: Court directed authorities to preserve CCTV footage and other digital material.
Alleged police excesses against lawyers: Notices issued on petitions alleging assaults and illegal detention of lawyers.
CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke on Thursday hit out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accusing him of bringing Delhi to a standstill to “protect” Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Addressing a press conference, he claimed that railway and Metro services had been shut down and Delhi had been turned into a “India-Pakistan border.”
