Leaders of the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) on Thursday warned the State government of intensified Statewide protests if it failed to issue a recruitment notification for at least 10,000 Sub-Inspector (SI) and Police Constable posts.
Addressing a protest organised by the federation at Dharna Chowk in Vijayawada, the youth organisation’s State secretary G. Ramanna alleged that the coalition government was playing with the lives and aspirations of unemployed youth and demanded that the government immediately issue a notification for the 11,639 SI and Police Constable posts that had been announced earlier.
Mr. Ramanna criticised the government’s reported move to issue a notification for only 2,500 posts, describing it as an “eyewash” given the large number of vacancies and the growing unemployment among youth.
He also urged the government to raise the upper age-limit for recruitment to 35 years, pointing out that no police recruitment notification had been issued for the past seven years, causing many aspirants to lose eligibility due to age.
He recalled that Home Minister Vangalapudi Anitha had informed the Assembly that there were 19,999 vacancies in the police department, but the Police Recruitment Board had sought financial approval for only 11,639 posts. He further alleged that the State government’s recently announced job calendar contained no significant employment opportunities for the youth.
Drawing inspiration from recent youth movements in Delhi, Mr. Ramanna announced that the DYFI would intensify its agitation across the State.
Informing that district-level protests would be held in front of Collectorates on August 5 and that agitations had already begun in several districts, he said these protests would escalate further during August if the government failed to increase the number of police recruitment posts.
SFI State secretary K. Prasanna Kumar participated in the protest and extended solidarity to the unemployed youth.
