According to the police, the complainant, Joseph Maria Solomon (22), a resident of Hanuman Koil Street in West Mambalam, works for a private food delivery company.

On the night of July 1, after completing his work, he was returning home on his motorcycle when three men, who were standing beside a two-wheeler, approached him seeking help.

They claimed their vehicle had run out of petrol and requested him to tow it.

Solomon towed the vehicle to an HP petrol bunk on Kodambakkam High Road, the trio allegedly told him they did not have cash and requested ₹3,000, assuring him that they would transfer the amount through Google Pay.

After receiving the cash, one of the accused showed him a mobile phone claiming the payment had been made before the three fled the spot.

When the amount was not credited to his bank account, Mr.

Solomon realised he had been cheated and lodged a complaint with the Nungambakkam Police.

Based on the complaint, the police launched an investigation.

Using CCTV footage from the area, a police team of the Nungambakkam Crime Wing identified and arrested Thiruchelvam (19), a resident of Subedar Garden, Kodambakkam.

During the investigation, the police found that Thiruchelvam is a second-year college student and has three previous criminal cases against him.

Police said efforts are on to trace two absconding suspects.
