The Madras High Court on October 1 closed a petition filed by Alangudi Assembly constituency AIADMK candidate Dhana Vimal who sought registration of a First Information Report (FIR) against former Minister C. Vijayabaskar (now in TVK) for having allegedly cheated him of ₹4 crore.

Justice V. Lakshminarayanan closed the plea after Additional Public Prosecutor (APP) Arun Anbumani told the court that a Deputy Superintendent of Police attached to the Pudukottai district police had conducted a preliminary inquiry into the complaint but did not find any substance requiring registration of FIR.

According to the complainant, Mr. Vijayabaskar, during the latter’s stint in the AIADMK, had called him on the phone on November 11, 2025, and asked him to arrange for ₹5 crore to prove that he could meet the election expenses if he was declared party’s candidate in Alangudi constituency.

The complainant claimed to have mobilised ₹4.5 crore from various sources and accused the former Minister of returning only ₹50 lakh to him but not the rest of ₹4 crore. However, on inquiry, the complainant was unable to prove the sources from which he was reportedly able to collect the money, the APP said.

“He had brought so many people, including his employees and farm workers, to claim that he had borrowed money from them but the inquiry revealed that those people had no source to be able to lend lakhs of rupees to the complainant,” Mr. Anbumani told Justice Lakshminarayanan.

After recording his submissions, the judge closed the petition before him with liberty to the complainant to pursue other legal remedies such as filing a private complaint before the court concerned.
