The Indian stock market rose for the second consecutive session on Friday, August 21, although uncertainties in the Middle East capped gains in the benchmark indices.

Broader markets outperformed the benchmarks, with the Nifty Midcap100 and Nifty Smallcap100 indices gaining 0.10% and 0.69%, respectively. Among sectors, the Nifty Metal index led gains, rising around 0.9%. The Nifty FMCG and Nifty Auto indices declined 0.6-0.7%.

Market breadth remained positive, with 1,885 stocks advancing on the NSE against 1,634 declines, while 125 stocks remained unchanged.

The Nifty remained range-bound during the session, with the index confined between the 20EMA and 50EMA on the hourly chart. On the daily chart, too, the index remained within the bands of the 20EMA and 50EMA, said Rupak De, Senior Technical Analyst at LKP Securities.

“Overall, sentiment remains sideways to mildly positive. On the lower end, support is placed at 24,200. A fall below 24,200 might trigger a correction towards 24,000. On the higher end, resistance is placed at 24,350; a rise above this level might take the index towards 24,500,” said De.
