In a development relating to the nearly two-decade-long Kalyani family dispute case, the Supreme Court on August 31 extended the ongoing mediation until the end of October 2026 and directed courts hearing the multiple disputes between the family members to defer proceedings while settlement talks continue.
“In view of the mediation proceedings pending between the parties, the parties may request the Court(s) concerned to defer the hearing in the pending cases,” according to the order.
A three-judge Bench headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, and comprising Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Justice V. Mohana, scheduled the matter for further hearing on October 26, 2026.
The Supreme Court had initiated mediation on July 13, 2026 and had appointed former Supreme Court judge Justice L. Nageswara Rao as mediator.
Since then, the process has received multiple extensions at the request of the parties.
The dispute involves siblings Baba Kalyani, Sugandha Hiremath and Gaurishankar Kalyani and their respective families, who have been locked in litigation for almost two decades over claims concerning ancestral family wealth.
The mediation arose after Sugandha Hiremath challenged the Bombay High Court’s May 4 . 2026 judgment declining mediation between the siblings.
The Supreme Court had encouraged the parties to explore an amicable resolution.
