Justice T. Madhavi Devi of the Telangana High Court directed the Hyderabad Police to preserve the footage of surveillance cameras at Malakpet police station from July 17 to 18 in an alleged case of custodial torture of a goldsmith, P. Srikanth.
The 37-year-old goldsmith filed a writ petition alleging that he was illegally detained by the Malakpet police in a case of gold recovery on the night of July 17. The petitioner’s advocate Kadire Ajith Reddy contended that Malakpet police illegally picked up the petitioner from his work place and subjected him to torture on the suspicion that he was connected to a gold recovery case.
The judge directed the Hyderabad Police Commissioner V.C. Sajjanar to examine the CCTV footage of Malakpet police station and take appropriate action against the officials concerned if it was a case of illegal detention. The judge also directed the Commissioner to consider the photos furnished by the petitioner pertaining to the illegal detention and custodial torture.
