Two unidentified suspected intruders, both appeared to be in their twenties, were shot dead by the Border Security Force (BSF) along the India-Pakistan border in Punjab’s Tarn Taran district on Friday (October 2, 2026).
A senior BSF official told The Hindu that the bodies were lying about 50 metres beyond the border fence till a flag meeting with Pakistan Rangers was concluded at 7 p.m.
“There were three men who were proceeding towards the border in daylight. They were trying to take cover behind the paddy crop and enter India. BSF personnel challenged them, but they continued to move forward. In the process, the two were shot dead, while the third person returned,” said the official.
The incident was reported around 11.30 a.m. near the Tarn Taran border. According to the official, the identities of the suspected intruders were yet to be established, and it was not clear if they had weapons on them.
“The men were wearing Pathan suits, and one of them had an expensive watch on him. The Pakistan Rangers asked for a flag meeting,” said the official. At the meeting, held around 7 p.m. on Friday, the Pakistan Rangers sought the return of the bodies, said the official.
“The bodies have been sent for post-mortem. Following the meeting with Pakistan Rangers, it has been decided to hand over the bodies after the legal formalities are completed,” said the official.
The local police had been informed and legal proceedings were under way late on Friday.
