Former State Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader K. Annamalai’s recently launched We The Leaders ‘grassroots leadership movement’ has released a policy paper for a clean and sustainable Tamil Nadu, with inputs from experts in the fields of environment and health.
Pointing out that all sectors of the economy, along with agriculture, coastal livelihoods, and urban infrastructure, are currently severely affected by changing weather patterns and climate impact, the report says studies from across India and the world highlight a close link between climate vulnerability and developmental stagnation.
The report is published not merely to identify problems, but to contribute to the search for practical, workable, and sustainable solutions that secure Tamil Nadu’s development, the group said.
Comprising about 250 pages, the report highlights several issues, including the impact of climate change, declining groundwater levels across several districts, the complex crisis facing Tamil Nadu’s traditional water infrastructure, air pollution, soil contamination in certain districts, the necessity to plant trees, and solid waste management.
To inspire behavioural change and community action across Tamil Nadu, We The Leaders has proposed to launch an environmental movement across the State through the month of August.
