A legislator of the Mamata All India Trinamool Congress suffered injuries when his vehicle was attacked late on Saturday night. Bibhas Sardar, MLA from Baruipur Purba in South 24 Parganas, was attacked on his way home in Joynagar from his MLA office. Mr. Sardar said his vehicle was stopped by a group of persons while returning towards his residence.
“These people threatened to kill me and said they would send me to crematorium. They also taunted me, saying I had become a great devotee of Mamata Banerjee. One of them then hurled a brick at the front windshield of my car. Somehow, I managed to get out,” the MLA said.

The Mamata Banerjee faction of the Trinamool Congress shared photos of the attack and sought that “perpetrators must be identified, and strict action must follow”.
.@BJP4Bengal's politics of intimidation stands exposed once again! The brutal attack on Shri Bibhas Sardar in Joynagar, accompanied by death threats for his support for @MamataOfficial, raises serious questions about the growing culture of political violence. When political differences are answered with bricks, threats and attempts on someone's life, DEMOCRACY ITSELF IS UNDER ATTACK! The perpetrators must be identified, and strict action must follow. But will the police take action? That has now become the biggest question since they seem more busy serving their masters than maintaining law and order in the state.— All India Trinamool Congress (@AITCofficial) October 11, 2026

“@BJP4Bengal’s politics of intimidation stands exposed once again! The brutal attack on Bibhas Sardar in Joynagar, accompanied by death threats for his support for @MamataOfficial, raises serious questions about the growing culture of political violence,” the Mamata AITC posted on social media. The party in the social media post said that when political differences are answered with bricks, threats and attempts on someone’s life, “democracy itself is under attack!”.

Several leaders of the Mamata Banerjee faction have been attacked since the BJP came to power. Only a few days ago, Mamata AITC spokesperson and MLA Kunal Ghosh was attacked twice on two successive days and his vehicle was damaged.
Mamata AITC general secretary and Diamond Harbour MP Abhishek Banerjee spoke to Mr. Sardar over the phone following the alleged attack, enquired about his health and assured him of all necessary assistance.
On Sunday, police personnel visited the residence of Mr. Banerjee and served a notice summoning him for another round of questioning in connection with the Camac Street party office billboard case.
This is the police’s second visit to the Diamond Harbour MP’s Kalighat house in a week for the same purpose. On October 7, Mr. Banerjee was not present at home, and no one was available to receive the notice. A team from the Shakespeare Sarani police station reached Mr. Banerjee’s residence in Kalighat to serve him the notice in connection with a complaint lodged by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC). The Trinamool leader has been asked to appear before the police on Monday (October 12).
On August 27, police personnel and KMC officials were engaged in a scuffle when they tried to visit the office of Mr. Banerjee on Camac Street. Three FIRs were registered at the Shakespeare Sarani police station in connection with the incident.
“The BJP [government] has stooped so low that a notice has been served even after Mahalaya when the Durga Puja is just days away,” Mr. Ghosh said.
