Metro rail, highways, railway infrastructure, ports and brain research centre among key projects

Mr. Modi, in a post on X, said he would inaugurate and lay foundation stone for development works worth over ₹13,000 crore in Chennai on Sunday. He went on to mention some of the projects across the Metro Rail, highway, railway, port, petroleum, and scientific research sectors.

Mr. Modi is scheduled to travel on the Chennai Metro from Porur Bypass station to Poonamallee Bypass station and return around 11.30 a.m. He will then visit the Jalakandeswarar temple at 12.15 p.m. and tour the Sudha Gopalakrishnan Brain Centre on the IIT-Madras campus.

Around 1.30 p.m., he will launch the development projects, and around 3 p.m., attend the golden jubilee celebrations of Jaigopal Garodia Hindu Vidyalaya Matriculation Higher Secondary School.

A major highlight will be the inauguration of the Poonamallee-Vadapalani stretch of Phase II of the Chennai Metro Rail project, built at a cost of around ₹4,900 crore. The corridor includes a 3.7-km double-decker structure and advanced signalling systems designed to support driverless operations. It is expected to improve connectivity between Chennai’s western suburbs and the city centre and reduce commuting time.

In the highway sector, Mr. Modi will inaugurate and lay the foundation stone for projects worth around ₹3,700 crore. These include the inauguration of the 36-km Vadugapatti-Therkuvenganallur section of NH-744 and the 30-km Madurai Ring Road section of NH-744A. He will lay the foundation stone for a bypass at Thiruvarur on the Nagapattinam-Thanjavur section of NH-83.

The railway projects, worth more than ₹750 crore, include the dedication of the Karaikal-Peralam railway line and three rail overbridges in Coimbatore and neighbouring areas. The flyovers are expected to ease congestion at level crossings and improve road safety.

Five redeveloped stations — Palani, Vellore Cantonment, Ambasamudram, Paramakkudi, and Namakkal — will also be inaugurated under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme.

Maritime infra

Several projects aimed at expanding maritime infrastructure and cargo-handling capacity will be launched at Chennai Port, V.O. Chidambaranar Port, and Kamarajar Port. Mr. Modi will also inaugurate a paved storage yard, four export-import godowns, an upgraded cruise terminal, and a Seafarers Club at Chennai Port.

The facilities are intended to improve cargo storage, warehousing, cruise passenger handling, and amenities for maritime personnel. He will inaugurate and lay the foundation stones for eight projects at V.O. Chidambaranar Port to expand cargo and container-handling capacity, support the transition to cleaner maritime energy, and improve logistics.

At the Kamarajar Port, he will inaugurate the Coal Berth-3 project and lay the foundation stone for capital dredging works for Stage II of Phase I of the container terminal.

In the petroleum sector, he will lay the foundation stone for a Group II/III lube oil base stocks project at the Chennai Petroleum Corporation Limited’s Manali refinery.

The scientific research component includes the launch of a global scientific mission to map more than 100 human brains into three-dimensional atlases at cellular resolution, covering the stages of life from foetal to old age.

He will also release C-STROKE, a human ischaemic stroke atlas featuring more than 1,000 annotated microscopic sections from a stroke-affected brain. The atlas is expected to help researchers identify potential new therapeutic targets.
