Migrant worker killed, another injured in terror attack in J&K’s Kulgam
Suspected terrorists shot dead a migrant worker and injured another in a targeted attack in south Kashmir’s Kulgam on Friday evening (July 31, 2026). It is the second targeted attack in the region since July 22, 2026.
A senior police officer told The Hindu that two workers were fired upon in Kilam. “One died and another was being operated,” said the officer. Officials said the injured person was taken to the Government Medical College, Anantnag, “for advanced treatment”.

Spain’s PM blames Ceuta migrant influx on criminal networks manipulating recent court ruling
Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said on Friday (July 31, 2026) that the sudden influx of migrants to the north African enclave Ceuta was caused by a trafficking mafia spreading rumours about a recent court ruling on immigration.
A Spanish Supreme Court ruled earlier this month that immediate returns of migrants crossing the border illegally did not apply to those arriving by sea. “What has emerged from our talks with Moroccan authorities is that trafficking mafias took a self-serving interpretation of a Supreme Court ruling,” he said. That interpretation “spread like wildfire in recent hours.”
Gauhati HC notice to Centre, IAF, Mizoram on plea alleging irregularities in land acquisition for IAF establishment
The Gauhati High Court has sought responses from the Ministry of Defence, the Indian Air Force (IAF), the Mizoram Government and two private persons on a public interest litigation (PIL) petition alleging irregularities in the acquisition of land for an IAF establishment near Lengpui in Mizoram and the disbursal of nearly ₹198.79 crore in compensation.

Waqf registrations rise by 35,000 in West Bengal after UMEED portal launch
The Union Minority Affairs Ministry has informed Parliament that 1,15,551 Waqf properties in West Bengal have been validated and approved on the Unified Waqf Management, Empowerment, Efficiency and Development (UMEED) portal as of July 15, 2026, up from 80,548 properties reported in February 2025. A rise of around 35,000 registrations in a year.
Former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee opposed the Waqf Amendment Bill and said that she would protect the Waqf properties in the State. She issued an advertisement in the papers in January 2026 stating that the State Waqf Board had filed a Writ petition against the issue at the Supreme Court.
Sewage contamination detected in 68% of water samples near Bhopal gas tragedy site, activists claim
A group of activists in Madhya Pradesh’s Bhopal on Friday (July 31, 2026) alleged that 68% of samples of the civic body-supplied drinking water in areas affected by the 1984 Bhopal gas tragedy were found to be contaminated with presence of faecal coliform in tests conducted by the activists and residents of the area.
According to the activists from four organisations representing survivors, 63 samples were taken from 30 localities around the defunct Union Carbide factory, the site of the tragedy, and tested between July 2 and 22, of which 43 were found sewage-contaminated.

India risks complicity in Israel’s war crimes in Gaza, Amnesty report reveals
A month after a UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry led by Justice S. Muralidhar concluded that Israel’s action in Gaza constituted genocide, an Amnesty International report stated some of the ammunition and weapons that could have been used in furthering these “war crimes” had possibly originated from India.
The non-profit’s report, ‘Made in India: The Supply of Weapons and Ammunition to Israel’, uses shipment-level trade data between India and Israel to show how India risks complicity in “crimes against humanity of apartheid, genocide and other crimes under international law”. It also noted that the Indian government became a significant supplier for Israel’s military operations by forging a close and profitable partnership with the Israeli defence sector.
