The 27-year-old is Northants' leading run-scorer in the Championship this season with 589 runs at an average of just under 50, hitting three centuries and two half-centuries.
McSweeney will feature in the county's next three County Championship matches against Lancashire, Kent and Durham, with fellow Australian Harry Conway replacing him as an overseas player for the final three games of the season.
"It's a big loss because he's been such a good player and a leader," said head coach Darren Lehmann.
"He loves the fans and the players and he's shown how professional he is.
He wants to go out with a bang so hopefully we can see some big things from him in these last three games." McSweeney has also impressed in white-ball cricket in 2026, with 485 runs in the One-Day Cup and 311 runs in the T20 Blast - which Northants won last month.
He will rejoin Lehmann's side for the 2027 season, having already agreed to a new deal.
Promotion-chasing Northants are third in the Division Two standings, two points behind second-placed Kent.
