A policeman, Sasikumar, 40, attached to Thenkarai police station in Periyakulam in Theni district sustained serious injuries after he was attacked by unidentified persons with weapons including iron rods.
The police said, Sasikumar was on night patrol near Kailasanathar Hill Temple in Kailasapatti near Periyakulam. He spotted two individuals standing near the temple in a suspicious manner. On noticing tools like crowbar in their possession, he questioned them. It was revealed that the duo had come there to commit burglary.
As Sasikumar who called for backup was waiting to arrest them, three other individuals who had been hiding in the dark attacked him from behind. They struck him on the head with weapons, including iron rods.
The unidentified men also robbed the policeman of his gold chain and fled the scene. He is undergoing treatment at Theni Government Medical College Hospital. A special team has been formed to nab the men who attacked the policeman.
