Indian equity markets surrendered their morning gains and ended lower on Tuesday, September 22, with the benchmark BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty50 coming under sharp selling pressure during the closing auction session (CAS).

The continued decline in crude oil prices, with Brent slipping below the key $100-a-barrel mark, provided some relief to investors and helped the domestic market recover from the day’s intraday lows. However, the benchmarks remained in negative territory at the close.

The Nifty50 settled at 23,329, down 85.30 points, or 0.36%, while the Sensex ended 329.91 points, or 0.44%, lower at 74,529.08.

The weakness extended to the broader market, with the Nifty Smallcap 100 and Nifty Midcap 100 indices closing 0.23% and 0.08% lower, respectively.

Among sectoral indices, the Nifty IT index declined nearly 0.9%, while the Nifty Realty index gained 0.9%.

Market breadth remained negative on the NSE, with 1,868 stocks declining against 1,679 advancing, while 123 stocks remained unchanged.

From a technical perspective, the immediate resistance for the Nifty50 remains at 23,400–23,500, according to Ponmudi R, CEO of Enrich Money.

On the downside, 23,300 remains the immediate support, followed by 23,200. A decisive break below 23,300 could intensify selling pressure and expose the index to the 23,200 zone.

“The RSI remains weak in the mid-30s, indicating subdued momentum, while the MACD histogram shows some easing in selling pressure but remains in negative territory, keeping the short-term momentum cautious,” Ponmudi said.
