With the Sri Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple consecration fast approaching, Minister for Energy Resources and Law C.T.R. Nirmal Kumar conducted an inspection of the newly established Integrated Control Room at Pudumandapam.
Set up near the Nandi statue, the high-tech command centre will serve as the nerve centre for pilgrim safety, crowd control, and real-time monitoring throughout the consecration. Following his inspection of the facility, the Minister held a review meeting with senior district administrators and elected representatives.
The control room operates under a Special District Revenue Officer, where pilgrims can access round-the-clock emergency assistance via toll-free hotlines (1800-425-6781 and 1800-425-6782). A robust security grid of 3,500 police personnel will be deployed, supported by 207 CCTV cameras, 70 facial recognition system units, 10 police help desks, and 41 public-facing LED display screens, said a press statement of the district administration.
For crowd flow and transit, general devotees will enter through the west and south gopurams starting at 10 a.m., exiting via the east gopuram. To ease traffic congestion, free shuttle buses will operate across key urban corridors, including the Mattuthavani-Simmakkal and Arapalayam-Periyar routes.
Special buses
Overall, 666 city buses (including 60 specials) and 300 mofussil buses (including 40 specials) will run on frequent rotations from major city terminals, supplemented by 55 free parking spaces and a 210-vehicle parking lot at the Periyar Bus Stand.
To maintain public health standards, authorities have installed 225 permanent toilets across 24 locations, 107 temporary units across 16 spots, and 17 dedicated water-dispensing stations alongside 26 large-capacity water tanks. A sanitation force of 264 regular and 60 specialised solid-waste management workers will operate across three continuous shifts, while 50 QR-coded temporary signboards will guide visitors, the statement added.
“Twenty-seven medical camps have been set up both inside and outside the temple complex, staffed by 70 doctors, 150 paramedical staff, Red Cross volunteers, 10 standard 108 ambulances, and two mobile emergency units,” a press release said. Additionally, a regional firefighting contingent of 400 personnel from Madurai, Virudhunagar, Theni, Sivaganga, and Ramanathapuram has been deployed.
Uninterrupted power will be guaranteed via dedicated back-feeding lines from the Subramaniyapuram, Mahalipatti, and temple sub-stations, while food safety inspectors will continuously collect and test meal samples from authorised annadanam organisers, the release said.
Emphasising the magnitude of the event, Mr. Nirmal Kumar urged all government departments to ensure they coordinate with each other so that every visiting pilgrim has a smooth, safe, and hassle-free darshan.
Collector Nishanth Krishna, Police Commissioner S. Rajendran, and Madurai Corporation Commissioner Gaurav Kumar, among others, were present during the inspection.
