The Mumbai Crime Branch police have arrested nine people from a Malad-based call centre for allegedly cheating at least 20 people by offering fake lifetime delivery franchises in the names of companies such as Amazon, Flipkart, Myntra, Blue Dart, DTDC and BigBasket.
A case has been registered at Bangur Nagar police station under Sections 318(4) and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and Section 66(D) of the Information Technology Act, 2000.
. The police said the call centre was allegedly targeting people in Mumbai as well as outside Maharashtra through telecallers, falsely claiming that the company had tie-ups with well-known courier and e-commerce firms. They offered prospective customers lifetime parcel-delivery franchises with promises of attractive returns.
During the raid, police arrested nine people, including the company’s owner, head of department and manager, among others. A local court remanded them to police custody until August 28.
Police seized 105 computer hard disks, 32 laptops, 30 mobile phones, five tablets and more than 100 franchise agreements from the premises. The seized property has been valued at around ₹25 lakh.
Police said the investigation has so far identified 20 people who were allegedly cheated by the call centre, while more complaints are being received.
The police investigation is ongoing.
